THROUGH THE TUNNEL
On the day you entered the tunnel without a kiss good-bye
I began my vigil throughout the nights and all the days
wrapped for comfort only in my trust of what is good
I warmed the tunnel with my breath
and sang my song
so if you wanted, you could hear
And I prayed for you
That in the darkness of the journey you were making
all you needed you would find inside yourself
But did you know ?
that as you crawled your way through mud
as thick as any wartime path that children make
I was waiting for you
With a plate of cookies and a cup of honeyed tea
outside the tunnel, at the other end
